LEARNING ĀYURVEDA... THIS TIME FOR REAL
Today’s entry will be a bit of a rant around my frustration regarding the dilution of Āyurveda and the fact that most of my past education has mainly been New Age Āyurveda (and I didn’t even know that was a “thing!”)
ĀYURVEDIC EDUCATION IN THE WEST
I have attended many Āyurveda programs and lucky for me, I’ve been able to integrate a lot of my experiences, education and training and manage to pull it all together in a way that has allowed me to have a full-time practice.
Over time, I have felt on occasion a certain lacking which kept me seeking more information to fill in the gaps. Not to mention I have had this hunger around Ayurveda which is driven by passion that has kept me wanting more. But the lacking I refer to makes sense now.
The current infrastructure and compiled education of Āyurveda here in the West is what I understand as the reason behind why so many other practitioners are not able to actually go full time with this.
It’s kind of disheartening to see, and I feel as if I was sold a product under a glorious name, but that’s actually a cheaper bootleg version of the original.
Like buying a car you’ve been told is a BMW but finding out it has a KIA engine.
And yet, this current system has a momentum going forward and is unstoppable.
HOW HAS ĀYU ACADEMY CHANGED MY EXPERIENCE?
Now, when I share my current experiences at ĀYU Academy with people who are still following the same paradigm I was blind sighted by, they look at me as if I’m crazy or don’t know what I’m talking about.
The thing is that I’m now in a position of challenging these supposed great masters that have presented themselves as Gods/Goddesses of Āyurveda by selling a product that isn’t guaranteeing depth outside of what people want to see. A product that is catered to the Western mentality of “fix me” and “heal me”.
And let’s not forget about the plethora of pieces of the vedic sciences (jyotiṣa, vastu, yoga, etc.) put together in a way that resemble Āyurveda, but that are actually secondary systems that add to the amazingness that Āyurveda has to offer, but that aren’t at the core of this science.
